Playing Dulcimer
in the ChordMelody Style by Rosamond Campbell Unfortunately,
the title of this book barely gives a hint of what this book is really
about, making it very easily overlooked by people who have already
mastered many of the basic chords and finger positions necessary to
play in the chord melody style.... that is, playing melodies
incorporating chords and chordal harmony notes rather than simply
playing melody lines with purely dronal accompaniment. A much
better description of this book would be 'Classical Fingerpicking
Techniques for Mountain Dulcimer', with possibly a subtitle of
'Fingerpicking in the Chord Melody Style'. This book has much
more to offer than what is implied by its title. It will teach
you basic fingerpicking skills and advanced techniques
for enhancing those
skills.
Rosamond Campbell's chord-melody style is much more than fingerpicking arpeggiated chords in various patterns. It uses lots of drags, brushes, broken pinches, slow drags, and held notes, and combines them with hammers, pulls, slides, steps, arpeggios, and other techniques that can enrich the texture of the music and make your playing more interesting. This book's emphasis is on beautiful playing from the start. If you've done either a little fingerpicking or some chord melody style playing, this book will enlarge your musical landscape with techniques to improve your skills and unfold the gifts you already have.
